how do i delete files i don't want

You can click on a file in the File>Open dialog box and press delete or you
can use Windows Explorer to navigate to the folder that contains your Word
files and delete them from there.
 
And if you're asking about deleting them from the MRU list at the bottom of
the File menu, press Ctrl+Alt+Hyphen, then click on the unwanted file. (This
will also delete it from the Getting Started task pane.)

But be _careful_ using Ctrl-Alt-Hyphen. It will delete any menu item, not
just your defunct file names.
