I have gone through, tools-internet options-delete history. There are a few
web pages that will not be deleted and they pop up when I type the first
letter of the site.

Why does this happen and how can I delete everything?

Hi,
These URLs are in the index.dat file in the History folder.
Free History Eraser from
http://smartprotector.com/eraser/free-history-eraser.htm will delete the
History folder (and the index.dat file) and a new one will be created when
you restart.
Or the History folder can be deleted manually:

Many people like CCleaner (freeware) from http://www.ccleaner.com/ for
thorough cleaning of the History. I believe it can clean out the index.dat
file.

Besides the index.dat in the History folderS, IE also remembers the last 25
URLs that you physically typed into the address bar (kept in registry) so you
need to erase TypedURLs for IE in the registry

Removing some or all entries is an easy registry edit.

For an easier, safer removal method, go to
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm
and download "DelTypedURL." This INF file will remove all entries.

These freeware programs will remove some or all entries:
IE Address Bar Editor: http://www.freesoft.fsnet.co.uk/ieedit01.htm
EditURLs: http://www.aandrc.com/editurls/index.htm

Also, within IE you can right click a history entry and choose delete, the
result depends on whether your history View is by Date, Site, or Order
visited today.

Tip: If you type URLs in via File> Open, instead of the address bar, they
aren't
saved in the TypedURLs key and you can keep a select few URLs in the
drop-down list.

Or, make sure that you can see hidden files/folders (Ctrl Panel> Folder
Options> View)
Browse to C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settingd\History and
delete individual items.

It may not be possible to clear selected AutoComplete items. It is often
necessary to delete the History folder to clear a few tenacious entries.

Hope this helps,
