Hi all.
I had to backup my hard drive in Novemember and restore my original
software. I was able to use a window backup utility, which created a My
Backup-november, etc. It is no Feb, and I no longer need the file My
Backup. However, I am unable to delete the file. I get a message
saying "Access denied. Makes sure the file is not in use or write
protected". I thought I did this when I went to the file and made the
file and all subfiles not "Read Only". However, during the
transforming, there was one dialogue box that popped up saying something
about some file having access denied, and gave me a choice to "ignore"
or "ignore all", and I chose ignore all. This was a subfolder under "My
Backup" file. So, I am unable to delete about 5 GB of a file that I do
not need. Help?

If this is the same installation of XP that was in use when the backup was
made, try opening NT Backup and using the program's menu to delete the old
backup file.

OR --If XP was reinstalled, you may be running into a permissions issue. In
this case, "take ownership" of the file to regain access. "Access" includes
the right to delete the file.

Thanks to Scooby and Sharon. Those suggestions were both helpful, and
have allowed me to delete about 80% of my 5GB, but there is still some
stubborn folders that refuse to go, even though I use the unlocker, and
allow file sharing. These files are under the My Backup folder, and I
no longer need them. I do not understand why MS locks this up so much.
Any further advice?

Use a different backup program? I'm being serious here. NTBackup is an okay
freebie. But you'll experience less frustration using a third party backup
program. Backup My PC is a nice one. Not free but not very expensive
either.

Or give one of the imaging programs, such as Acronis True Image, a try. An
image is a copy of an entire partition but most imaging programs have their
own custom "explorers" that let you peek inside an image and grab
individual files and folders.

PS: I've looked in the MS Knowledge Base for more info about maintenance of
the files created by NTBackup (or maintenance problems) but have not been
able to find anything useful.

What does Unlocker say? "No Locking handle found"?
