How do I deactivate code in word to read it?

New user here. Please forgive me if I don't know proper tech. terms. In my
office word 2003 I get gobbly goop instead of text word. It looks like some
kind of code maybe? I scanned the document originally using HP 3 in 1. I am
frustrated. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Well, there are all kinds of "code," some of which can be toggled off with
Alt+F9. But since you say you got the gobbledygook by scanning, I would
guess that your OCR software is not up to the job, and you're in for a long
spell of cleaning up the scanned text.

Two possibilities. Either you have scanned to an image and you have opened
the image directly in Word and you are seeing the code that makes up the
image,
or
As Suzanne suggests you have used inadequate OCR software, maybe with the
wrong settings, or the document does not lend itself to OCR or the scanner
is defective or poor.
