I simply want to make address labels to place on the envelopes when sending
my holiday cards.

Use Word, its much more user friendly for lables than trying to set up
reports in access. Or did you mean to post in the word news group anyway????

If you want to simply type some labels, then I would agree with MikeJohnB's
response.

If you want the extra work and benefits of using an Access database to do
this, then set up a table with fields for your label information and then set
up a report (using the label wizard) which prints labels from your table.

That's a simple start. You can get more thorough later.

If you have the names and addresses in an Access table/query and are using
Access 2007 go to Reports - Create - Lables and follow the directions. It's
really easy

Let's get started, so that I can make Holiday labels, OK?

I've never found any difficulty using Access for labels. In fact it's
usually easier than setting up a merge.
