How do I create a hidden sublist on a button?

I am using a navigation bar in a shared border and I would like to have the
button's open up to a list of items to select. So if you hover over the
button it will give you multiple options to choose. So a subset of a broader
topic...

You can find a few by googling for "menus" or "expandable menus" or "drop
down menus" (withou the quotes)

Here is one example I found somewhere, although it doesn't use buttons, just
