I inherited this computer and don't have original disks. All of a sudden,
when I wasn't home, I started getting error messages between my Outlook and
my AVG virus software. It suggested I correct the error but that requires
inserting disks I don't have. It is a real pain now since everytime I open a
message or send a message or reply to a message I get an error message. It
also refuses to remember my outgoing email password although it has no
trouble sending my mail. I can function but not well. I have no idea what
to do. The person who gave me the computer doesn't have disks - it was from
her husband's office. Anywone have any suggestions. It is running on
Windows 98 (wouldn't upgrade - I tried).

I know this doesn't solve your problem, but chances are, then, that the
software you have is illegal. You should consider purchasing your own copy
of Office. If you ever lose your disk drive or other important component of
the PC you'll need a set of installation disks. Non-OEM versions of Office
2000 are readily available on eBay.

The products were not illegal. They were from an office that then went to
the person's home and then on down to me. The computer is a good ten years
old so... I have disks for Mcirosoft OFfice personal but this is business
and I don't know if they would work. They are also for a different version.
They are from my old non-working laptop.

Whenever a PC with installed software is tranferred, no matter how the transfer happens, it is required that the disks for the installed software accompany the computer always. Without the disks, as Brian said, you have an illegal installation of Office. Not your fault, but the fault of the company who passed on the computer without the disks.

Well, all that is great but it doesn't help the problem. Since the computer
is so old upgrading isn't going to work since it probably wouldn't take the
software. I guess I have learned my lesson - AVOID MICROSOFT. I mean - this
is ridicuouls.

Most software vendors have the same policy, so you should be saying "avoid
computers". Don't blame Microsoft for the mistakes of whomever gave you
that PC.

Go out and buy yourself a retail license from eBay. It won't be that
expensive.
