How do i copy a downloaded movie to a CD so i can watch it in my DVD.

I have downloaded some movies, not illegal, and has now
tried to copy them to a cd using a cd-burner.It does not
work and i have tried to download various programmes to
convert it to compatible file so that the dvd can read
it.I am finding it very hard to find a programme that
works properly for this.Often the programme cant even
play the movies i have downloaded, it says it doesnt
recognize it.Could somebody please help me with
this.Would realy appreciate it.
