How do I convert from mpeg2 to avi?

Have just bought a Sony DVD camcorder, which outputs mpeg2 files. Am trying
to import into WMM, but experiencing intermittent problems. I understand that
converting to avi prior to importing will help.

What's the best software to use to convert the files? I have Nero Vision
Express, so I guess I could import the mpeg2 files into that and use it to
render avi output, which I could then import into WMM. Is that sensible? Or
is there a better way?

btw ... I am in Australia so my camcorder is PAL, not NTSC (I have no idea
if that is relevant!).

This is my first ever post. Hope it makes sense!
Thanks :)

Hey there aussie_mj....cool that you have a Sony DVD camcorder....I recently
bought
(last fall) Sony's HC40. I use a program called AVS Converter to convert
formats. Its a nice easy little program that accomplishes a lot. You can
find it by going to www.download.com and doing a search for it. I see that
it is $29.95 but I think its worth it....and by the looks of the almost
700,000 downloads it has so far, others must like it too. You can use it as
a rippper/ author/ burn or strip audio and lots of other good things you need
to do periodically. I think there are probably some other 'free' programs
around too, but I doubt they are as good as this one. Good luck.

It made perfect sense. Yes you can use NVE as your suggesting or you could
use AVS Converter as dickmr is suggesting either way you will get the same
result in about the same amount of time.
The only reason I can think of that you should purchase AVS instead of just
using NVE is that if you truly get into video editing as most do (once you
start your hooked) then you will most definitely find uses for AVS Converter
time and time again.

I use FlaskMpg. Its good and its free - the perfect combination while I'm
saving for a new computer! LOL
