how do i convert a file

I need help please!~
#1I saved my movie to a cd..but when I tried playing on my dvd player it said it o0nly reads mpeg files..does this mean I have to convert the file to mpeg

What's the difference between making movie cd or a movie dvd? I purchased my computer to make dvds..but I see I don't have the software to do that. The tech at Best Buy told me I could make dvds with wmm...I'm so confused..WHy did I spend more more money for a dvd burner if the cd burner will do the same thing...!

Please help..I am so confused.....

1. Yes, you need to convert the file to MPEG. Specifically
you need to use a DVD Authoring program to convert the
video to MPEG-2 format, and create the file structure
required to play the DVD in a standard DVD player.

2. A Video CD (VCD) use a lower-quality, smaller-size format
(MPEG-1). And as the name implies, you burn it to a CD.
A DVD uses a higher-quality, larger-size format (MPEG-2),
and as the name implies...

The tech at Best Buy was wrong. You cannot create DVDs with
WMM. The main difference between a CD and a DVD is that you
can fit more than six times more information (data, music, video)
on a DVD than you can on a CD.

So you didn't waste your money on a DVD burner, you just need
to spend some more money to get some DVD Authoring software.

Actually your PC may have come with a DVD Authoring
program. Many OEM PCs that include a DVD burner
also include that type of software.

So double-check before buying any additional software.

look to see if you have Sonic MyDVD or something by Roxio or anything that
says DVD in the name in your start menu - tell us what you have...

i do have sonic but need to upload to create movies, how do i convert a file..do i need to buy software for that

these are 3 options available on the sonic website...the first 2 are 14.99..the third 19.99. do i need to purchase these

The Sonic software should do the conversion without needing you to get more.

Did you purchase a DVD burner separate from your computer or did it come
with it? If you got it at Best Buy, did you install it yourself? And, did
you get a disc with the computer or DVD burner that is the Sonic software?
