I am trying to open a remote site and download it into FrontPage 2003 into a
blank website. The website in question is behind a firewall. I have the
(http://www. ...) firewall access URL and the ftp server, user and password
information but I cannot get through. It gives me the message that the server
does not have Share Point Services installed, but I have the share point
services disabled in my blank website. How do I get through it, my friend
wants me to make changes to her site?

You can't.

If the FP extensions are not installed (or they are doing something else to
keep you out) then you can't log in via HTTP.

You will need to get and learn to use an FTP program, or connect with
FrontPage via FTP.

Have the client contact the host to get a copy of the site so you can work
on it, or otherwise find out how they expect her to edit.

Their webserver is on Linux Enterprise and Linux Fedora could that be an issue?

I did try an ftp software and the FP ftp but before the ftp will work I have
to enter the http://www. etc. to get through the firewall and the FP and the
ftp software do not recognize that as an ftp site.

How do I get past the firewall using ftp commands?

If you can't get through the firewall with FTP, and FrontPage extensions
are not installed, then you must make other arrangements for accessing the
site - talk to whoever is in charge of the server, or as "_" suggested ask
your client for a copy of the site.

Thank Ronx, That's the problem, the client does not have a copy of the
website. If I purchase MS Web Expressions 2 upgrade, will it help me get
through? I have the access information to get through the firewall, the only
thing that is stopping me is the share point services and/or FP extensions.
Does WebExp require servers to have Share Point Services or special
extensions installed like FP?

I want to know about Web Expressions because I will be changing and updating
this website for my client and I don't want to run into more problems when I
upload it back to her server.

Also, I accidentally figured this out yesterday, if I open the website iin
question in IE and click on Page in the tool bar then I can choose Edit with
FrontPage and it downloaded the whole website (page by page) and I now have
it on my computer. Why does that work?

Expression Web isn't going to fix your problem. FP doesn't require
extensions and neither does Expression. But, both *can* use them.

Expression Web can use either FTP or FrontPage Extensions. If the firewall
blocks access using FTP then you will have to use HTTP - this requires
FrontPage extensions on the server.

Using "Edit in FrontPage" and downloading the site page by page as you did
will work for *some* sites -but for most web sites it will fail. All you
get is what the browser renders. If there is any server side scripting
(asp, PHP, asp.NET etc) then you will not get any of the code that is
required for editing the web site, nor any databases or files not directly
linked to from the page (SSI includes etc.)
It is easier to use File->Import in the FrontPage menu to do this - but as
I said, you may miss the important "behind the scenes" bits of the web
site. The only sure way is to open the site in FrontPage or Expression
Web, or an FTP client, and download everything.

Okay everyone, thanks, one more question.

I tried using Adobe Contribute, but it tells me that the username or
password is incorrect, however, they are not, so it seems that it is not
negotiating the firewall either, even though I am using the http: code that
was provided by the host. I guess I will have to talk to them and get them to
walk me through it. It is just that they were the ones updating the website
before and now the client wants me to do it, so they will be losing money and
will perhaps not be too cooperative. They gave her the access information so
she could use Adobe Contribute to just change simple things like text and
photos but we cannot get through. I was hoping FP would let me.

I'm just a beginner but to connect to an FTP site, don't you have to use
ftp://xxx.xxx.com not http://xxx.whatever.com?

Yes. But the presenting problem claimed he had to get past the firewall
using http before he could use ftp. A very confusing statement.

As I understand it, the only way to access an Ftp server that is also on the
Web server is if the right ports are open on the server firewall and the Ftp
server is configured to allow private logons that link to the Website
directory in question.
