How do I connect building a distribution list to the contact list

Recently I had a computer crash and had to re-load my Microsoft Outlook
software - Now when I try to build a distribution list I get an error message
when I try to automatically pull an e-mail from the contact section.

A second question - Can you pull information from Contacts into an Excel
spread sheet? If so, how do I figure out how to do this?

What error message do you get?
How did you migrate your Outlook data?
What version of Outlook?
