i have a desktop computer, a notebook computer, and an external
firewire drive. I can connect both computers to the drive but if the
notebook is running the desktop can't see the files on the external
drive. can i somehow configure my system so that both computers can
share and use the drive simultaneously?

Plug the firewire drive into one computer or the other. Then network the
two computers together using whatever means is convenient (an ethernet
crossover cable is the lowest-cost way to manage the feat when only two
computers are involved), and then turn on sharing for the firewire drive
on whichever machine it resides.

additional info: my internet connection is shared via a router, the
desktop is hard wired, the notebook via a wireless connection. there
are no available ethernet openings on the router.

Unless the main PC is on all the time the best option for this would
be to use a NAS or any networked drive or a simple switch box (can you
get these for firewire?)

Some routers come with a USB port to a drive. Your firewire drive
might accept both firewire & USB or use different dongles or you can
remove the drive and get a new cheap caddy.

It all depends on your current setup.
