How do I configure Outlook2000 to use authentication?

Recently my email server began rejecting sent messages with the error report
advising me to "configure your mail client to use authentication." I've been
unable to figure out how to do this. Any help would be apppreciated.

If you select Help > About Microsoft Outlook. Look right under the product
name/version number it will state what mode Outlook is in. Does it say
Internet Main Only or Corporate/Workgroup?
