Especially for e-mail, RTF may be a better option. I'm having clients
tell me that their corporate e-mail systems reject ZIP files.
In Word, open the document in question, do File >> Save As, and in
the file type drop-down, choose Rich Text Format (RTF). For text-only
documents, .RTF files are usually less than half the size of .DOC
files. A .ZIP file is almost certainly smaller still, but if the
recipient can't receive it ...
I save all my local documents as RTF unless they contain embedded
graphics.
