How Do I "Clean Up" Outlook?

Hello, all you venerable Outlook experts out there....

I am running Outlook 2002 (XP) on a 2.4GHz Pentium 4 with 256 MB of RAM.
A few months ago, I installed a trial application that inserted some
kind of an addin or helper application into Outlook. After I uninstalled
the program, every time I started Outlook, I got an error message saying
that a file was missing.

I looked everywhere I could think of for a solution, and tried
everything. At some point (I'm not even sure which of my "fixes"
accomplished this), the error message went away. However, I think the
effect is still there, because it takes a full minute to open Outlook
now. That isn't normal, is it?

I'm embarrassed to say that I don't even remember at this point which
application caused the problem in the first place. What I'd like to do,
though, is get Outlook back to its original, pristine form--without, of
course, losing any of my data. Unfortunately, as you all know, Microsoft
products don't work like others; you can't easily uninstall and
reinstall.

Can anyone tell me how I can accomplish this?

Thanks.

The addin may be shown under addins, you can allways run detect/repair

Thanks, DL. These were two of the things I tried as part of my many
attempts to fix this problem. The addin wasn't listed, and Detect and
Repair did nothing (I ran it several times).

However, your post prompted me to go through Outlook Options in detail.
I discovered that "Enable Instant Messaging" was checked. I don't use
IM, and thought I had it disabled in XP. I unchecked it, and now Outlook
loads in 5-10 seconds! I might actually be able to use Outlook regularly
again.

Sigh...I'm not a Microsoft basher and have been using Microsoft products
(I initially typed "problems"--Freudian slip, I guess) for a long time,
but it definitely does seem that a preponderance of my problems are
caused by Microsoft products. 8-(
