How do I choose notebook memory?

I have two questions here about notebook memory
1) My notebook currently has a 256Mb DDR SDRAM Memory Module (so it seems) in one slot and one empty slot. I want to add some memory to the empty slot; but are all notebook memory types on the market compatible? For instance, if I buy a DDR SoDIMM memory, will it work on my notebook
2) Do both memory slots have to be occupied by the same memory size (i.e., if I have 256MB in one, does the other one have to be 256MB, or can I put 512MB as well?)
Thanks!

For the correct answers to these exact questions, consult the
manual that came with the laptop and/or the laptop's manufacturer's
website. In general, though, it's absolutely essential that any new
RAM module(s) be fully compatible with both the motherboard and/or any
other RAM module(s) already in the system.

If you cannot lay your hands upon the laptop's manual and the
manufacturer doesn't provide a support web site, you can use these
utilities to help determine the correct type of RAM needed:

Also, Crucial Memory's web site (www.crucial.com) has a database
to help to find the right RAM for your specific make and model
computer.
