How do I choose a database program?

I am new to creating databases and would like recommendations for what
program to use. This is for our basketball league with over 1000 kids
playing. Some board members want to use Outlook, in the past we have used
Works. My gut says Access. Any experience and comments would be greatly
appreciated so I can share them with our Board of Directors to make the right
choice.
 
Depends on what you need to do, but Access can do far far far more than
Works. If you care about being able to add features in the future, I would
use access.

If I'm not mistaken, Works is typically free and Access costs a couple
hundred dollars depending on how you buy it. That alone should give you an
idea of which product is going to work the best and offer the most features.
 
It depends on your 'user' requirements, and your programming savvy.

Anything from an XML file to MySql would work, Access is a good program, but
all users that need to 'access' the data will need a copy of the access
program, and/or someone will need to build a 'front end' using one of the
many web technologies and/or programming language.

So to answer your question -- It depends. You need to work with the board
and firmly establish the 'user requirements'

Access hands down!!

1000 kids is peanuts. There are databases handling hundreds of thousands of
people resords for one thing or another. Outlook IS NOT a database! Contact
me at my email address below if you need help. My fees are very reasonable.

A week ago you told me this: So what's up now ??
I got seven projects from the newsgroup in the last four weeks. Three were
the result of my responses on the newsgroup AND four (YES 4) were the result

The above squabble aside and going back to the actual question
although Access is far more powerful than works and more than capabl
of doing what you want cost wise it may not be the best choice

Something like MySQL would be probably be more suited to a smal
dataset like you're using - the disadvantage would be that you'd als
have to develop a suitable front end

Really you need to decide whats more important - if you (and everyon
who will be using the database) can afford Access then it's a goo
choice otherwise look at alternatives
