what im trying to do on a windows XP system is avoid installing software into
the main drive area that has windows installed (in my case the c drive) I
know i can redirect installations to the d drive during installation but is
there a way to force the setup program to always default to the d drive. im
thinking it must be a registry setting.

As far as I know this isn't possible. This probably is why software
manufacturers incorporate the browse into their install packages so you can
install onto another drives if you wanted. I do this all the time with my
games. The usually default is Program Files. There is a third party program
called nLite that can change where the Program Files folder will be during an
unattended installation but this involves recreating a new copy of your
installation CD. But as you said, if this is possible, it must be in the
registry. Good luck.

Hi Brian:

Have you thought about mounting a partition (D: for example) to the default
program files address on C:? All your programs stuff would then be stored
physically on the D: partition even though it would appear to be on C: for
all practical purposes.

To change the default Internet Explorer Download Directory, go to
Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer

Change the path you want to assign as IE's Default Download directory here:
Download Directory.

Setup/Download Path: Go to Start/Run: regedit and navigate to...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion and look for
the key called SourcePath. Change this key's value to your hard disk path.
