How do I change the file type of a video?

Me and my friend made a video and I was trying to edit it on Windows Movie
Maker as i always do but i hit a huge snag. It's the wrong file type and I
don't know how to change it. I seriously need help. Please!
 
What filetype is it?

There are many convertors out there.

Do a net search for video file converters

It's AVI file type and I need to to go into Windows Movie Maker. Is it
possible to convert it to the correct file type?

At left side menu expand "Import Movie Source Files" then Video>AVI
