In Windows 3.1 there was option to set file access to 32 bit
whereas 16bit (dos mode) was the default. Even most newer
msdos(?) and alternate dos type systems are 32 bit now.

there is also a 32bit setting in some BIOS's for the hard drive
but just leaving the BIOS settings at factory default for the
hard drives should be fine. So unless the system is older
than an intel 386 cpu (1990 or earlier) 32 bit is default (iirc)
and operating systems automatically install to that setting.

DOS mode in Win9x/ME is 16bit (command line applications),
But all operations and applications (normally) even for Windows9x
are 32bit for several years also.

Unless he has a 64bit cpu/OS in which case I think they adjust
down to 32bit if the software itself requests it (hard coded).

and again...some dual processor mainboards support a few
64bit pci type cards or operations but thats likely not case here. ;-)
