How do I change/modify options in the Status Bar information text

My operating system is XP Prof. The status bar showing when I clicked on an
jpg or gif image would automatically show the dimensions of that image. THe
other day I added a number of new programs, unrelated to status bar as far as
I could tell, but now when I click on an image, the status bar gives me type
of image, size in kb, and date modified, but NOT dimension. Dimension and
type are the only pieces of information I want. How do I change the
information listed in the status bar?
I want it to show dimensions, again. Thank you.

The "View" function doesn't make any difference as far as what shows down in
the 'status bar'. I can view a highlighted jpg or gif image, for instance in

I don't remember XP ever doing this in the Status bar. The information can
be displayed in the "common task pane" or, if allowed, in tooltips that
appear when you hover your mouse over a file.

Folder Options> General: place check in box for "Show common tasks in
folders." If common tasks is still not visible (seeing the directory tree
in left pane instead), click the Folders button in the Standard toolbar.

You're right. Thanks for pointing that out David. Good grief, I'm so
accustomed to getting the info other ways that I forgot (or never noticed)
that the info was in status bar too.

YES, what shows in the status bar DOES also end up showing in the tool tip,
I found that out after a while. You mention that the tooltip is normally in
HKEY...etc. I'm sure that is correct, but I am a neophyte as far as anything
to do with the registry and/or changing anything there. The registry scares
the begeebies out of me because I don't understand my way around and for
neophytes that's a good way to respect the registry. So, is there some
"safe" way for me to change the info displayed in the status bar/tooltip?
Right now it shows type, date modified and size. I want it to show dimension,
type and size.
I tried a Restore just now back to May 27 and then May 8th, too, but
whatever causes the status bar info to change isn't getting restored from
either of my trials.

Thank you for understanding what I was trying to explain in my
less-than-tech-speak way. If a registry change is needed, could you walk me
through it?

Hi, Sharon,
I'm glad you got to read David's reply, too. I use the status bar a lot
because I copy all kinds of pictures and clipart and when I rename a file I
always include the size because clipart and thumbnails and animations all
vary so wildly in size and when I go looking through my folders it's
convenient for me to instantly see a file size in the file name. If I haven't
confused you totally, as I go to rename a file I've just pasted into a
folder, as I type I can look at the status bar and it shows me what the jpg
or gif size is so I can type it all in one movement without having to have
remembered what it was from the cut/paste procedure. Having that function of
the status bar get changed to info I didn't need has been a pain, and I'm
very grateful for the help.

The first thing to do is check that registry value. Type Regedit in Start Run and it's like browsing folders.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\image
infotip=

And then some more
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg
@=
infotip=
PerceivedType=

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\<whatever the @ equaled above>
infotip=


It's a inheritance system. Nearly anything overrides the default settings.

Ms Max,

A program you installed unregistered the default shell image viewer.
From the start menu run "regsvr32 shimgvw.dll" without quotes

Run these two commands. From Start, Run and type:

regsvr32 /i shell32 (Borrowed this gem from David Candy)
regsvr32 /i shimgvw

The first one restore the props, and the second will fix the perceived type.

Okay, David,
So I type Regedit in Start/Run. And assuming I find
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\imageinfotip=...

then what do I do?

I've never gone into the registry before; it's a language unto itself.

It's perfectly fine for you to assume I don't know the FIRST thing
about anything involving the registry. I'm less than a first-grader on
her first day of class.

The info I want showing in the tooltip and status bar is most likely to
be whatever was default initially, since I was happy with the info I was
originally getting, before whatever-overrode-the-default went and changed it.

what I want the tooltip and status bar to show is: dimensions of the file
image, type of file, and size of file.

I don't know what program I installed that caused this entry to change, but I
have been systomaitcally uninstalling every program I added in the past 2
weeks, and still, the entry in tooltips and status bar gives me the altered
info
of type, date modified, and size, which is info I don't need.

If you can find a photo in My Pictures you can follow my instructions. While it's describing different things the metaphores are the same - folder looking thingys (keys) and file looking thingys (named values and the default unnamed value).
So
My Comp is like HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
My Docs is like SystemFileAssociations
My Pictures is like image
photo.jpg is like infotip

So just try to follow them. If you can't say why.

This direction you write seems easy enough. Just one question -- do I type
each regsvr32 in a separate RUN command, or do I type them back to back in
one step?

Thank you, both, again. I feel like kneeling down and kissing your pairs of
feet. I'm really really REALLY grateful. The default property of the
tooltip/status bar, though seemingly minor, is a feature I use and rely on SO
often that having it missing is like finding one's water supply dried up.
Until you don't have something you've become accustomed to, you don't
appreciate it.

In any case, one more time, THANK YOU VERY MUCH for all your time and help.
and I'll be waiting to receive your answer on which way to input the RUN
commands.

When you answer me I'll tell you what program. Stop uninstalling stuff. It won't necessarly fix the problem anyway and it's a lot of work when the fix is so simple. If I was sitting at your computer it would be fixed, and I would know how it occured, in under a minute without changing ANYTHING else on your computer.

Though I may need to know one more thing than I asked to identify the program.

Do this instead if you want to know why. Right click each of these keys and choose Export and make sure you do it as a reg file. Open the Reg file in Notepad (right click and choose Edit) and paste here.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\image
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\<whatever the Default Value equaled above for .jpg>
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\jpgfile

one by one, and it WORKED. I have my status bar/tooltip back the way
it was. I'm so delighted! And SOOOOO grateful to you two.
