I have just done a vista home premium upgrade over a win xp MCE
installation, however I now have a vista install but with the letter H
assigned to it. when I go to management console and ask to change the
drive letter I get told that I cannot do this because it may be a boot
volume or have page files. What do I have to do to change the drive letter
to C: ?

I cannot install any of the drivers I need to get the system working until
Drive c is recognised as when I try it says that I do not have enough free
space to install

I have never liked upgrading an OS.

IMO it's always better to back up all your data and perform a brand new
clean install. You can then format/partition your drive and set it up however
you like.

Use "Disk Management"

Start > right-click on "Computer" > select "Manage" > on the left-hand pane
click on "Disk Management"

...then..

In Disk Management:

right-click on the drive which is to have its drive letter changed > and
select "Change Drive Letters and Paths" > hit the "Change" button > use the
drop-down list to choose a letter and then complete the wizard etc. etc.

NOTE: if you are changing the drive letter assignment for a CD/DVD-ROM drive
you may occassionally have to point Windows to it should you add remove
Windows components or somesuch. Also, 3rd party programs already installed
*may* have difficulty in that they already expect a certain drive letter for
the CD/DVD-ROM. If it becomes a problem, set it back to the letter it is
now.

You obviously didnt read the initial post, disk management wont allow me to
change the drive letter from H to C

Whoops .. you are out of luck. AFAIK, system drives are stuck on the letter
they are at [and boot drives too]. There might be some problem plague
bizarro way to wring another drive letter out, but it would be very
unadvisable.

Sorry :(

I dont have a choice , I have the home premium upgrade which means I have to
have an os before I can upgrade, I cant do a clean install

all i did was upgrade xp mce........why did it change the drive letter\/

Not quite....you do actually have a choice and there are 2 ways of doing it.

1. You should be able to boot off the Upgrade CD and during the verification
stage pop in your XP media assuming you have it.

2. XP installed you should have the option during the vista upgrade of
performing a clean install which will completely wipe your drive.

Read the prompts carefully and you will see the clean install option.

Probably because there was not enough room on the C: drive and someone told
it to install somewhere else.....oh wait...that someone would be YOU

When I did the install there was 286 gb of hard disk space (is that not
enough space) duh!
anyway I dont have an H drive so how could I tell it to install there? duh!

As they say..... sarcasm is the lowest form of wit
