I recently updated Windows XP home and now I have to click an Icon to log on
and get to the desktop.

Since I am the only user for my machine this is an unnecessary step. I'd
like to have the machine boot directly to the desktop.

Can you tell me how please?

Thanks

Configure Windows XP to Automatically Logon:

Solution 1:
Click Start, Run and type "control userpasswords2", and click Ok.
Uncheck "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer"
option, and click Ok.

Solution 2:
If you have one user account and no password configured, Windows XP will log
you in automatically. Otherwise, you'll have to do the following:
Obtain and install the Windows XP version of TweakUI.

Download it from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

Open TweakUI (it's in Start -> Programs -> Powertoys for Windows XP).
Expand the Logon branch, and click Autologon.
Turn on the Log on automatically at system startup option, type your
username and password, and click Ok.
