how do I avoid "echoing" text in PowerPoint when making changes?

I am a beginner to Power Point and am taking it for a required class this
summer. The tutorial is having me move placeholders to a different location
on a slide, and removing and adding bullets. When I try doing this, I get
"echoing" text, the text that was there before stays on the screen along with
the newly placed text, and clutters the area. How do I fix this problem?
 
How are you moving the placeholders from one part of the screen to another (steps taken)

I am clicking on the outside border of the placeholders. This is also
happening when I try to reformat the buttons.
 
Are the duplicates permanently there, or are they just temporary "ghosts"?
Like, if you move to another slide and then back, are they still there?

If so, then you may be inadvertently duplicating them. One way you could be
doing that is by pressing Ctrl when you're clicking and dragging. Another
