Outlook 2003 removed the ability to add file system shortcuts to the
Shortcut area.

Actually, there is a way to do this.

Go to the shortcuts section in outlook.
If you have the screen maximized, change the size so it's smaller and you
can see other windows or the desktop behind it.
From the My Computer icon, locate the folder or file you wish to include to
Outlook shortcutes.
Drag the folder or file to the "Shortcuts" heading in Outlook.

But that doesn't buy much, since it doesn't work in any way like the file
system shortcuts used to work in the Outlook bar, You can't drag messages
to it, for example. All it does is give you a place to click to open the
folder, no different than having a shortcut on your Desktop. In fact, a
shortcut on the desktop is better because you CAN drag messages to it there.

It's difficult to see how MS could have got this so wrong. I'm wondering just
what the advantage is now of using Outook 2003 as against any one of several
other non MS options. Integration could be one answer but i don't see that as
being a likely problem here which leaves only the convenience of using what
program ends up on your computer. Personally i'm planning to look elsewhere
unless i see signs of MS listening to what people want.
