how do i add custom animation task pane

The custom animation have dissapeared from the task pane drop down list. It
now opens only in a pop up. How do I bring it back to the task pane?

Hmm, I do not know what you mean by a pop-up but have you checked in Tools -
Options - Edit tab - way at the bottom if there is perhaps a check next to
new animation effects? If so remove it and see if the task pane is back.
 
Do you have new animation effects turned off (in PPT 2002 or 2003)? This
causes you to have only the old 2000-style animations, which are in a
regular dialog box instead of a taskpane. Turn them back on in Tools |
Options | Edit.
