how do I add contacts from a category to a distribution list?

I have a client who is trying to manage thousands of contacts via outlook.

I could use some suggestions.
 
I was on the phone with MS tech support for nearly 2 hours tonight.
Apparently the problem is a bit larger than that which has been covered in
books.

You never posted a question.
If your question is in your Subject and is only how to add a category to a
DL, then my question is why do you need to?
If you've created a category, use it instead of a DL. It is more robust and
reliable.
