How do I add the newly created contact to my existing Distribution List
directly without having to open my Distribution List?

I want to know if there is a way to add the person's information while I
have the Contact's file open (that is, while I am creating it) and before I
close it, without having to open the Distribution list separately.

Is there a way?

Thanks in advance.

How come that this shortcut is not possible, Russ? (Just curious of why a
strong Microsoft program like that does not allows that to be shortcutted?).

You can do it the opposite way - Open the DL and add a new contact.

I'm neither a programmer nor a developer, but as I understand it membership
in a DL is not a property that can be assigned to a Contact Record. For the
most part, DL's are a poorly implemented afterthought in Outlook, not a
reliable robust feature. Most users I know give up and abandon using them
after a while.
Outlook put its development efforts for Contact grouping into Categories,
which of course you can assign to the Contact Record and use in lieu of
DL's.

Clearly the OP knew that. Octavio was asking how to avoid that method.

I'm not sure that he did Russ, but you might be right. My reading of
the OP was that he wanted to do the creation of a contact, and the
adding to a DL, as one seamless operation. So I was just pointing out
that it could be approached from the opposite direction.

Either way, I agree with your other response. He's better off using
categories; and they can be used for so much more than just DL
replacement (but no, I don't send my Christmas cards that way).

If you are using Outlook 2003 or 2007, why not try using Categories instead
of Distribution Lists?

Russ, with VBA it would be possible. But there're some Ifs: The contact must
have exactly one e-mail address (not more and not less), and the address
must be unique. And as I remember, a fax address would be considered an
e-mail address.

However, if it's not important to add it as a contact item, it's easier to
add just the contact's name and e-mail address to the DL.

As I recall, this is the reason the developers have chosen not add the
"feature." It would create more trouble than its worth.
