I want to make my own master because none of those provided do what I want.
On an original master one can see "Object area for Autolayouts", I'd like to
create an additional one on my master but I can't see how to make a copy or
generate a new one.

You can't add placeholders to the Master. Return to View > Normal and then go
to Format Slide Layout and you'll see the layouts that you have to select from.
Just like placeholders, you can't add new slide layouts.

Can you tell us what it is that you want to do that you can't do with the
placeholders and layouts that are available? With that information maybe we can
offer suggestions and tips.

I want a master slide that has up to 5 text boxes + title. I am putting songs
onto powerpoint and want each song to be on one slide, as a result I need
more text boxes so that I can overlay them on each other. By having them in
the master it will speed up the process and enable me to set the font info
according to the master rather than be continually altering the 'new' text
box that I currently have to add. One of the reasons that I want each song on
its own slide is I can use the slide number as the song number.

I agree that being able to design your own Master Slide with any
number/position of text boxes would be a huge help to many projects. But it
is not currently an option....

What I would suggest is developing a master slide with one text box set up
with the font size-color-bullets-etc. you desire. Then as you create a new
slide, duplicate the master slide text box to the number needed. This way
your formatting, except position, is already done.

The biggest annoyance I currently have is that I can't add a "tagline" to my
presentations easily. I basically have to use the generic slide master,
manipulate the slide in normal view once I create one I like, and then copy
that slide with my added "tagline" to create the presentation style I'm
looking for. That means I have to remember to update the tagline on every
slide! (Being able to have something that says, "Enter tagline here!" would
definitely help me remember to update it and avoid being in the middle of a
presentation and finding out I didn't update it and two slides say the same
thing!)

Oh well... maybe a few more versions of PowerPoint down the road, right?

Kirsten,
You might want to check out PPT 2007. The new version has the ability to
design and use your own layouts as well as your own masters in
presentations.
