dont use system restore in windows xp and 2000 (got them both installed),
but folder still apears when deleted.

disable ' system restore' to achieve that folder remains deleted ... afaik
system restore creates this folder at reboot when it is enabled .....

Don't fool around with that folder unless you're tired of having your
whole system.

Anyway i may leave folder on my system drive but it apears on every of 6
hard drives on my system that i dont like.

Hi,

System Restore places a SVI folder on every drive/partition it sees,
including external drives, and some flash drives. Delete it's contents,
hide protected OS files and forget about it. It will remain empty as
long as System Restore and the Indexing Service is disabled.

Windows 2000 has no System Restore function, but you'll have a System
Volume Information folder anyway. With no special functions enabled it
will contain a single file named tracking.log, which despite its name is a
binary file. The file is created when the system is installed and updated
occasionally. I have no idea what its function is or what would happen if
you deleted it, and I have no plans to find out experimentally. If anyone
else cares to try, I'd love to hear the results.

Finish your peas. Then do your homework. And don't go near the dynamite
in the toolshed.

Hi Gary,

As far a Win2000 and the SVI folder goes, here's a snip from the
following article.

The DLT Client service monitors activity on NTFS volumes and stores
maintenance information in a file called Tracking.log, which is located
in a hidden folder called System Volume Information at the root of each
volume. This folder is protected by permissions that allow only the
system to have access to it. The folder is also used by other Windows
services, such as Indexing Service.
