They didn't adapt.. they did what all civilisations do.. they adapted their
surroundings to suit their own needs.. notice, when looking at pictures of
Aztec temples, how they cleared areas of forest and then built them, as
opposed to building around the trees, leaving enough growing space for
future growth..
