i'm sure someone on here used to talk about chainsaws or used them in the past
but how dangerous are these things?

Just like any power tool - or passive tool for that matter - they are only as dangerous as the user.

I mean, come on, what kind of a wuss question is that anyway?

Are we talking on a scale of 1 to 10?

Are we talking about danger relative to average user's IQ using some complicated mathematical formula?

Maybe you have to cut some wood and you're nervous?

Perhaps you're wondering how quick the average professional chainsaw can dismember human limbs? :)

Yep, such a wuss question.

Wuss question? lol

I am intrigued about it all.

Nah Flopps i'm talking about scenarios. I've not cut nothing except my grass at home! lol

If one was cutting through a very big tree and that chain hits a nail in that tree. Is there a chance that thing will snap and take off one's head or cut off an arm?

Do professional people wear protective clothing to use these things?

I'm sure a chainsaw will cut through a limb very quickly, the Texas Chainsaw massacre showed that.

Probably not, depends on the quality of the chainsaw of course, but unlikely.

Is the sky blue? Do I enjoy a pint of Guinness?

That was a movie. A story of fiction.

But use your loaf, any tool that can saw through hard wood would cut through a soft squishy human body no problem at all.

How are you with nail guns then? :)

omg you don't believe that leatherhead was real?

I don't believe in Santa or the tooth fairy but leatherhead was REAL :)

A sharp chainsaw will lop of a human limb , whoosh , just like that.

You need proper protective jacket , trousers, gloves, helmet, ear tecters and a face grill and boots to be safe with a chinsaw.

If a chainsaw hits a nail or some obstruction and it is not too deep in a cut, yes indeed the whole saw can whip back. Same danger when cutting brash. Only a total dummy would use a saw above his head.

Chainsaws are pretty deadly in in inexperienced hands.

Ok, ok, the TCM was based on fact but was, shall we say, given considerable artistic licence.

As I remarked earlier, common sense, common sense.

how'd you know all of that barbarian?

Excuse me whilst I bang my head very slowly against a brick wall.

Are you really as grey-matter challenged as we're seeing here?

Come on, it's a wind-up ain't it?

Because I've never met anyone so........... oh, never mind

(bite your tongue, Tony, bite it....)

"The chain saw is the most dangerous hand tool that can be purchased on the open market. It requires no license and no training to own or operate it. An overall average of 40,000 injuries and deaths occur annually"

That figure is just the "reported" accidents given by hospitals willing or able to furnish the information. That figure does not include out-patient visits to the doctor.

Chainsaw are VERY dangerous and all operators should take a certificate of competence before operating one. With out the training & protective equipment the chance of cutting a limb off & being killed is very high.

Even if i'm cutting 1 log i put on all the gear of chainsaw boots, chainsaw protective trousers, chainsaw mitts & hard hat combi. I've seen the damage that a saw can do to someones body & it's not a site i want to see again!!

If you need work done then get a professional to do it!

If you cut a limb off your body unlike a tree it will NOT grow back!!

You see, Murdoch still appears to have all his bits and pieces so I reiterate my view that any tool is only as dangerous as the user.

Perhaps there's a sliding scale that gives different power tool to stupidness of user risk factor...

I'm a modern barbarian psd99 though I still have me dads 60 year old four foot felling axe.

Here is a little 46 foot tall tree I cut down that was a bit of a nuisance. I had to climb it to delimb it so that it would fall just so. Climbing a tree and chopping of branches with a chainsaw is not to be recomended for folk of my age and health.

Tree on right of cabin, already had some lower branches removed courtesy of the dummy landlord.

More branches removed, note the proximity of the power cables, one touch and its pouff abarbaian has gone to vallhala.

Arty shot of delimbed tree.

Fallen tree, note the branches used as a cushion. I had to top out the tree, thats cut the top portion of the tree of first, about 8 feet, so that it would not break the power lines. Had some pics of that and some of the tree logged but they seem to have disappeared.

Shot of tree and equipment, note the climbing harness, rope in previous shot. No pic of the ear tectersor of rawhide gloves. Ear tecters are a must have, very important sfaty equipment.
Was a tricky little job, what with the power cables, closness to cabin, about four feet, and the gap I had to drop it into, did not want to rebuild the fence. So I'm pretty chuffed with meself.
I could not be arsed with all the kit so apart from fore mentioned kit I was dressed in sandles and shorts and tee shirt, my excuse, well it was pretty hot.

Remember kids DO NOT RUSH OUT AND BUY A CHAINSAW AND GO HOME TO CUT DOWN STUFF. CHAINSAWS ARE DARN DANGEROUS.

wow barbarian that looks so nice
i want to move up north now

murdoch u must be the bloke that mentioned chainsaws before

thanks for information all

As dangerous as a loaded gun..If you don't treat it with respect somebody will get hurt..Most modern day chainsaws a pretty safe though..They have a gaurd which has to be held back to engage the chain, as soon as the gaurd is let free the chain stops moving

When i was 15-16 i used to do a bit of work over the summer for my uncle who owns a landscape gardening business in hednesford.

I only got the crap jobs, tidying up and stuff, but i did get a lesson on chainsaws as we used them frequently, he had some very skilled people working for him who could trim bushes into dinosaurs and stuff.

But one of his guys, even with the protective equipment on (its a bit like chainmail, steel mesh) and whilst he was chopping down a small tree managed to lose control of the chainsaw,(there was a metal retainer rod in the tree) it bucked and took most of his arm away. They "track" when they hit something hard like a bone and it followed that from his bicep to his wrist.

This was a small chainsaw, 18 inch blade.

In a word "lethal"
