I have Outlook 2002 as my default mail client. I also have OE6 as primarily
a newsgroup reader. The other day I set up OE as a mail client as well. OE
is *not* my default mail client, and the prompt box comes up saying "OE is
not default mail program" do I want...I click *no*. Still I get mail coming
into the inbox of OE!

I *send* my mail with Outlook 2002, and get replies back to my messages in
OE6! How can I fix this? What the Heck is that about? :-\

Thanks,

It sounds like you have the same account set up in both
programs. You need to choose one mail program (OE or
Outlook) and then delete the duplicate account. You can
have separate mail accounts and use both products at the
same time. When OE (or Outlook) asks if it can be the
default say "no" and check the "never ask again" box. The
default account will send email whenever you click a
mailto link or the like. When you are in the non default
program/account mail will be sent from that account.

You can still have your news account set up either from
Outlook or OE it just depends on which program you say is
the default news handler. (See options for each program)

Hey Lucky,

I won't start about the wrong forum this time... (but still this isn't the
Outlook Express form)

Anyway, the switch he is talking about is a something you add t start the
program with. Just like the /? switch you use for so many DOS programs. You
can add this switch to your shortcut properties so it will read "C:\Program
Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /outnews

I created my shortcu for the newsreader different. I choose to create a new
shortcut and in "Type the location of the item" I put news:/// This created
a shortcut to my default newsgroupreader (OE).

Don't uninstall OE byt the way. OE is needed in order to let Microsoft
Office Outlook 2000 function correctly. This is probably for Outlook 2002
still the case

Forgive my ignorance Lanwench, but "/outnews switch"? What is that? This
kind of path/code stuff has always been very cryptic for me, but I would
like to understand it.

I probably will remove OE mail client soon, but would still like to know
about this. I'd like to add that the mail appears to arrive in the inbox of
whatever mail client I have open at the time

Start OE with the /outnews switch (change the shortcut, and put that
parameter after the close-quotes). Also, if you don't want your mail coming
into OE, might want to get rid of the mail account in there?

Jan,

Thanks for your thoughts. Probably the best thing is to eliminate the OE
"duplicate" account. I really just set it up so as to see what it was about,
and to help someone with a question they had about viewing attachments. When
they said that what I suggested did not work for them, I set OE up to see if
it did work as I described and it was fine. Copied/pasted URL for that
message below:

message
The upshot of all of this was that while I was in OE mail client, I suddenly
received mail that would ordinarily go to Outlook 2002. I had Outlook as the
default in Tools>options>other tab> make default. OE was set up to *not* be
the default mail client, but these parameters were obviously over ruled by
my being in the given program at the given moment.

So, I'm going to remove the OE mail account; that's all there is to it. In
fact I've already done so rather than to wait -how long- for an explanation
of the code thing I was offered a while ago.

Thanks,
LuckyStrike ;-)

Thanks, but at least I'm half right, as the problem also occured when
Outlook 2002 was open. :-)

OK. I think I can follow that. I presume the typed path is accurate? So,
basically you are saying for instance I should right click on the shortcut
(icon)>properties> type in the "switch" in the shortcut key field or in the
startup field? BTW, I am fairly confident that "Lanwench" is of the female
gender. ;-)

I'll get to a different way, when I can handle the standard way, if you know
what I mean. said:

I wasn't intending to un-install it, as I use it for my newsreader for a
multitude of NG's already, and everything is set-up within it. I know these
would come "unglued" if I were to un-install it. I have already removed the
"mail account" from OE however, but it is simple to add it again if I really
wanted/needed it.

Thanks for the additional Link for Outlook.

Roady,

You never clarified if the command should be placed in the "Start in" field,
or in the "Shortcut field" of the shortcut properties tab of the "shortcut".
<Did that make any sense?>

Also the command that you provided, is that typographically accurate? see
C/P item below:

I have quoted you with this copied and pasted item from our previous
correspondence "....add this switch to your shortcut properties so it will
read "C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /outnews..."
