How Can Undesired Program Association Be Modified?

XP Home Edition: Using the "Opens With..." option, I accidentally left the
checkmark in "always use the selected program..." section. Once the
checkmark has been accepted, the box is greyed out. Attempts to
delete/modify the file association from the list does not change the program
accidentally associated with it. Does anyone know which Registry
key/keyword can be modifed to eliminate the grey-out effect? I would like to
be able to change the type of program at will, without accumulating a list of
programs under the "Opens With..." option.

It depends on your need for an interface to do it. If you can use regedit to
modify the entry, it's easy to remove. There is also the "FileTypes" tab in
Folder Options.

Folder Options, in Control Panel, Filetype tab, scroll to file type, Change
button, Highlight a program' (note the checkbox in preferred type)

Regedit, find filetype.
For example:
the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg\OpenWithList

Tried both options.

Folder Options: I highlighed each program then removed the checkmark from
the "Always Use Selected..." option--each time to no effect. (Also tried
deleting then re-adding the extension from the File Types list.)

Regedit: The file extension (.cwg) does not show an Open With List
subfolder. It displays only a default: REG_SZ with "cwg_auto_file" as a
parameter. Oddly enough, when I right-click the .cwg file and select Open
With, the three erroneously chosen programs still appear in the list.

Your recommendations made sense, though. Perhaps the unique file extension
(a saved game) severly limits the options for repairing mistakes. Thank you
for your time and attention.
