How can this happen?

I developed a workbook using Excel 2007 that has about 30 and sometimes more
sheets. Every sheet has at least one command button, some have 2 or 3.
Yesterday I put this file on a system that is using 2003. Every single
button changed the assigned macro without warning. Does anyone know how or
why this would happen so that I don't do it again?

First, standard advice: if you're developing workbook models others
will use, and some of those others use older versions of Excel, like
Excel 2003, then YOU should be developing using the OLDEST Excel
version any of your users would be using. IOW, this problem is to some
extent self-inflicted.

Did you save this workbook in Excel 2007 originally as an XLSM file or
as an XLS file? Is this a 2007 XLSM file that the Excel 2003 users are
opening using the Compatibility pack? Which steps did you take to
place these command buttons on the worksheets? Pick any button that
changed: what macro did it call originally, and which macro did it
change to calling?
 
This workbook was save in Excel 2007 but using 97-2003 extensions.
I put this workbook on the same computer several times with upgrades and it
worked perfectly.
For some reason this week when I updated it the buttons changed. The first
few buttons I put on using the tools in Excel the rest I just copied as they
did the same thing.
Again it worked for about 6 weeks and I made updates every week.
