"slide notes" are not compulsory.
But they can help with your actual "speech".
You could write your speech in the notes area, and then print out your
"notes" to help when you present you actual presentation.
But I find the best presentations are when the presenter just reads from the
heart... as it's a subject they know and love inside out.
View menu > "notes pages" will show you your slide in the top half of a
page, and the bottom half is for you to write your 'notes'
