How can mimed Application files open in existing application instance?

So, if I just booted my computer and double clicked a mimed file, it would launch the application and open within it. Then I double click a different mimed file, and it should open within the now open application.

Currently every time I double click a mimed file, it always opens in a new application instance. I really need to fix this since the whole point of my application is to load two different files for comparisons; and files will be (for the most part) launched either from a sharepoint location or from a local directory; not from within the application.

All help is appreciated.
