My dad bought a used computer from a pawn shop. It is a Dell with XP. It
apparently is NOT a genuine legal copy of Windows XP, because it did not
pass the authenticity test. My dad cannot get windows updates as a result.
Is there anyone at Microsoft I can talk to? What number can I call? Is there
anything I can do? Thanks.

He bought a computer. He did not buy any software for it. XP or
any windows operating system must be sourced separately and then
added to the computer.
If the receipt shows that he bought the computer WITH XP Pro
or any other operating system, then he can go back on the seller
and insist on getting the software license that was sold but not
given to him. You do not own software: You license it.

Hi,

Just because it fails does not necessarily mean it is not legitimate. The
tool should prompt you to call, which is exactly what you should do to
verify this.

Practically all Dells shiped with a Windows licence of some sort. Look
on the case and you should find a sticker with a Certificate of
Authenticity number and the Windows version that should be installed on
the computer. If the sticker says Windows XP then you legally own a
valid Windows XP license.

"If the sticker says Windows XP then you legally own a
valid Windows XP license." Plain as day to me....

.... for Home?.. Pro?..

The OP does not have a valid key for the version installed.. that the OP has
a valid key for XP is not questioned..

The sticker on my laptop shows "Windows XP Home Edition". Perhaps the OP's
sticker has the version listed also.

You can count on it.. bringing up 'properties' on the My Computer icon will
no doubt tell a story..
