How can I use MM2 with analog videos?

How can I use MM2 to convert, and or edit my analog 8mm,
Hi8, and VCR tapes? I have captured 8mm using Click to
DVD. It was saved as an mpeg2 file. My saved files will
play in everything I've tried except MM2. MM2 will play
the audio, but the viewing screen is black. This was a
bundled product with my Sony computer. Sony believes MM2
will only support digital media. Does Microsoft have
free support for MM2? I am beginning to feel like a rat
in a maze. I am going back and forth on websites trying
to find an answer that I understand. I am a novice and
need step by step instructions. I have checked Papa
John's website and could not recognize the solution.
When I see convert or save to AVI I don't know how or
when to do that. Sorry frustrated, Thanks

Hi Dave,

It's an MPEG2 codec issue. Seems that you don't have one that will work with
MM2 and the file. So you have 2 paths to go down.

1 - Get and install an MPEG2 codec that MM2 works with, and also works with
the file... this might be the most difficult path. The page on my website is
Importing Source Files > Video > MPEG2

2 - Open the file in other software and convert it to something like a
DV-AVI file that works in MM2... this is probably the easiest.

For the conversion you can try your Sony software. If you haven't used
TMPGEnc yet, then it's free trial 30 day period includes use of its MPEG2
codec. There's a download link on the CD Burning > Introduction page.
