How can I use HP Scanner 5500c with WinXP

I can't get this stinking 1 day old scanner to work. HP has no customer
support that is of any worth, and of course MS will not help, why should
they. Is there a gentle person out here that has any thoughts on how to fix
the problem, or what software to buy to make it work. Mechanically I think
everything works OK, but the software doesn't work. HP wants money for a new
driver, even if I just bought the unit. What kind of service is
that?.......Peter

I have "never" heard of HP charging for a driver. It's up you to go to their
web site and hunt it down. Is the scanner a current model? Is it Windows XP
certified?

HP has great support for it's products. I did choose to purchase for $10 a
CD rather than download 35MB of WindowXP compatible software and drivers for
my four year old 4200C HP scanner and was delighted it was available. Go to
HP.com and look around.

I installed my HP5500c by following the directions and it
works just fine.

HP has free driver downloads and a fairly good FAQ system.

They do charge too much for person to person support.

Did you read the installation instructions and understand
and follow them?

Well, I ordered the CD and I hope it works. Many thanks for the nice
replies...........Peter

The dealer who sold you the 5500c must have taken the CD out
of the box, because all new HP scanner come with a full
installation CD. Did you buy a store model or a stolen
model?

I purchased the unit from Office Max yesterday. It had all the items that
show in the manual. It still didn't work more then exactly one time. I
purchased the unit to copy all my slides, so the grand kids have something
to look at. BTW, since you were so kind to write me back, is there a Adobe
program that will work best with the scanner, just in case you have
knowledge of this......Peter

You will need the HP drivers for the auto-feeder to
function... Talk to Office Max, they owe you the correct
CD.

You must install it according to the directions, software
first and the install will prompt you when to plug the USB
in the first time.

If you plugged the USB cable in at any time before it was
prompted, you will have to remove all the related hardware
and software and do a clean install.

You will get a icon "HP Director" and that is your gateway
into the scanner.

Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0 is about $80-100 and has
excellent properties and does do import from a scanner.

PaperPort is excellent, not just for scanning, but document
management.

But he will still need the HP drivers for the photo-feeder
in the lid.

in message | The best program I have ever used/seen for a scanner is
PaperPort 9.0

Absolutely! Paperport doesn't supply drivers. It uses that which is supplied
by the hardware manufacturer. It works great with my Canon scanner!
