This info is from Canon support. If you can't get to the event selection
mentioned by them and by me, uninstall and reinstall. This may be the best
time to update the drivers. Also, if you recently ran the MS update there
is
a scripting problem in the Canon software and may have been removed by
Windows malicious software remover (there is an alert on the Canon support
website).

Scanning with the operation panel
MP Navigator starts and allows you to specify the advanced settings for
scanning documents from this machine by pressing the <Color> Start or
<Black> Start button.
If MP Navigator does not start automatically when the <Color> Start or
<Black> Start button is pressed, make appropriate setting on the Scanners
and Cameras screen to start up MP Navigator.
In Windows XP, the first time you press the <Color> Start or <Black> Start
button, the program selection dialog box is displayed.
1.. Place the document face-down on the platen glass. You can also load
documents face-up in the ADF.
2.. Press the <Scan> button. The machine switches to scan mode.
3.. Press the <Color> Start or <Black> Start button. MP Navigator will
start.
Setting the scanning method for the <Color> Start or <Black> Start button.
You can change the behavior resulting from pressing the <Color> Start or
<Black> Start button as follows
1.. Click the Windows 'Start' button then click 'Control Panel'
(Non-Windows XP: click the 'Start' button then click 'Settings' , 'Control
Panel').
2.. In the open window, click 'Printers and Other Hardware', then click
'Scanners and Cameras' (non-Windows XP: Double-click 'Scanners and
Cameras').
3.. Right-click the scanner icon for the machine, then click 'Properties'.
(Windows 98/2000: Click the scanner icon for the machine, then click
'Properties'.)
4.. On the Events tab, in Actions (non-Windows XP: 'Send to this
application'), select the operation when you press the <Color> Start or
<Black> Start button.
You can specify different applications for the <Color> Start or <Black>
Start buttons. In case an application such as Imaging or Photoshop is
configured to open, ScanGear MP opens first when you press the <Color> Start
or <Black> Start button on the machine.
5.. Click 'OK'.
6.. Windows 2000 only: Restart your computer. The new settings are not
applied until you restart your computer.
The first time you press the <Color> Start or <Black> Start button in
Windows XP
In Windows XP, when you press the <Color> Start or <Black> Start button on
the machine in Scan mode for the first time, the program selection dialog
box is displayed. Select the application to launch, select the Always use
this program for this action checkbox, and then click 'OK'. The next time
you press the <Color> Start or <Black> Start button, the application you
selected will be launched.
