I have my Vista laptop (HP) hooked up to an external monitor. The laptop is
closed and on a shelf that is very hard to get to. I would like to shut it
off at night. I can shut it off with the keyboard. Is there any way
(physical or software controlled) that I can turn it back on without
physically opening the lid to get at the on/off button?

Thanks... Bob

Is there any way much less technical? Also this seems to involve sending a
signal from a second computer which I don't have.

Some motherboard BIOS include an option to turn the PC on at a certain time
every day. With luck your PC's BIOS will have that option somewhere.

You want non-technical, have I got a deal for you.
Move the laptop....
OR
Cut a piece of plastic such that when you pull or twist it, it exerts
physical pressure on the switch.
Small balloon on the end of a plastic tube.
Bicycle brake cable with some mechanical dodad on the end.

Sometimes, there's an option in the bios to start with a key, but you
can't access that either. External keyboard is unlikely because of the
power it would have to consume when off. For the same reason, wake on lan
may not even be available in a laptop.

Desktops often have a setting to resume after power failure that would
allow you to cut the power to turn it on...but don't recall ever seeing
that on a laptop.

You didn't ask, but sometimes operating a laptop with the lid
closed can be VERY bad for cooling. Some intake or exhaust cooling
air through vents in the top or around the keyboard. Closing the lid
can make something inside get too hot. Hot spots on the display can't
be good either.
That it hasn't failed "yet"
doesn't mean that it's safe to run that way.
