Well, actually you could pull the EEPROM and read it in a PROM reader,
then decompress it with a utility specific to that BIOS maker, or try a
few general purpose utilities... IIRC, some use LZH compression.
Otherwise, what difference does it make? Just use an earlier version or a
revision know working for other owners of same revision board. Website
forums are a good place to find fellow users of (whichever) board you
have.
Why do you care? What good is knowing the BIOS version if it won't
POST? If you are contemplating replacing the BIOS chips then you'll be
getting the latest version of the BIOS available from that chip seller
(www.mrbios.com is one).
You might try putting the flash program and update file on a DOS
bootable floppy to see if the BIOS is sufficiently okay to boot and run
a flash on the BIOS. However, since you say the box won't POST then you
won't get far enough to boot from the floppy. You'll end up having to
replace the BIOS chip(s) assuming the motherboard or other components
aren't the problem.

"It doesn't POST". "It doesn't seem to POST." There's a difference?
What something seems is how you experience it. Sure looks like it
doesn't post for 'Not so quick'.
