How can I tell if check for updates is working

I posted this message a few days ago. Since I have not seen any response, I
think maybe I posted it in the wrong place, so I am trying again.
I have searched this forum and have not found the answer to my problem yet.
I installed Defender a few days ago (I was using Antispyware Beta 1) and it
downloaded the latest updates right after installation. Now when I click on
the "Check For Updates" button, nothing happens. I don't get a message that
it is checking for updates, or that all updates are current, or that there is
an update available, or that it is finished checking for updates, nothing.
All I can do after waiting several minutes is click "OK". Is this normal? How
do I know if I have the latest update? How do I know when Defender is
finished checking for updates? I have gone to windows update and it does not
show I need anything. I am using this at home and my firewall is Zone Alarm.
I can't find anything in the firewall settings that would prevent me from
checking for updates, but maybe I am missing it. Can anyone help me figure
this out?
Thank you,
PaB

What's the date on your definitions, as shown at the bottom of the home
page?

Do you have balloon notifications turned off? Normally, when you press
check for updates, you should get, in a second or two, a balloon stating
that Windows Defender is looking for definitions, followed (after some
minutes, perhaps) by another balloon stating that Windows Defender is up to
date.

Thank you for your reply.

The date on the definitions is 3/30/2006. It is probably the latest anyway.

I don't know how to turn the balloon notifications off, but I had noticed
that they no longer ever appear, so they must have been turned off somehow. I
have wondered where they went and I have tried to find out how to turn them
back on. If you will tell me how I would like to do so. It appears that may
be the problem.

Once again, thank you. The balloon notifications were turned off. I finally
found out how to enable them, and after I did so I was able to see the
results of the check for updates.

I'm glad you figured out how to turn them on, because that's something I
haven't looked up yet. The last reply I had to a message on this issue was
irate that I would think that anyone would be so foolish as to want them on,
so I'm relieved you aren't in that camp!
