How can I stop Word Pad from opening in Word

Open the document from Word pad rather than from Explorer. You cannot share
the same file type between two applications. Windows has no way of knowing
which application you saved the document from.

WordPAd uses two file extensions RTF and txt you can right click on a wordpad
file with one of those extensions then click on properties and in genral tab
click on change button and choose wordpad insted of word, with doing this
change all files with rtf or txt extensions will open with wordpad instead of
word:)

Harvey has that covered in his response, however if you do that RTF files
will always open with Wordpad even if you save them from Word.
