I have imported a list to contacts that was part of a
personal address book. I have made my contacts my address
book. Now when I luanch a new message and attempt to
address the mail from contacts I have repeated contact
names, some are fax, others are alternate email. How can
I get it to show only the the primary SMTP as the contact?

Thanks

The standard behavior for the Outlook Address book is to display all
electronic addresses (both fax and e-mail). That behavior cannot be changed.
The only way to prevent the display of fax numbers is to store them in a
different field or to disguise them (e.g., precede them with an alpha
character) so that Outlook won't recognize them as phone numbers.
There are also a number of utilities available that can do this for you
automatically. Some are listed here:

I would just like to add my vote to Ron's original
question. It sure would be nice to see this made an
available option. Seems useless and a nuisance that the
fax addresses are displayed.

Add your vote to ours:
You can send Outlook feature requests to (e-mail address removed) with "Outlook"
in the subject and to (e-mail address removed)

Even though the utilities are inexpensive, I took this
manual approach:

Create a view in Outlook Contacts that lists all your
contacts in one row per contact. Be sure to include the
fax number field.

Click the fax column header to sort by fax number. This
groups all your contacts with fax numbers together.

Go to the bottom of the list. Type something like F: in
the bottom entry. Copy the F: with Control/C.

Go up through each entry, click at the beginning of the
fax number, use Control/V to paste the F: into that entry.
Took maybe 10 minutes for a couple of hundred contacts.
