I am a 12 year old genius in distress. My mom just bought a
laptop that has Windows XP Home Edition. My computer (I'm
saying mine because I paid for it) has Windows 2000
Proffessional. How can I install a network between both
computers (I tried with the laptop (the laptop is the
computer with Windows XP),it said i should run a disk it
made durring the network installation on the computer that
I will connect to it,when i run the disk's content a
message pops up saying "The Network Setup Wizard is
supported only on Windows 98,Windows 98 SE,Windows
Millennium Edition,and Windows XP.Instructions for
configuring a network with other operating systems can be
found in the help files in those systems".When I opened up
Help and I wasnt able to find anything about installing a
network with a different operating system),considering
that 1 of them is a laptop (I want it to be connected to
the internet and allow my computer to connect to the
internet through it) has Windows XP Home Edition, and the
other (the one I'm trying to connect to my mom's) has
Windows 2000 Proffessional?I need a response fast due to
the fact that I am very busy (leader of 2 gaming clans
(http://lodhome.tk),I have a website to remake,have to
make a flash movie, stuff like that...).Don't be fooled by
my age,I am 10 times as smart than the normal 12 year old
kid.

Dear Genius
I know exactly how you feel - it really should be simple,
but unfortunately, unless you know some basic stuff, its
not.

First line of attack is to give each of your machines a
TPC/IP Network Address.

Normally use (for internal systems) 192.168.1.1 for one
machine and 192.168.1.2 for the other.

Effectively, you are creating a network called 192.168.1
which can then have .1,.2,.3,.4 etc as its members.

SETTING THE ADDRESSES
Using Explorer, Find Network Places, Right Click, Click
Properties, Right Click Local Area Network, Click
Properties, Highlight Internet Protocol TCP/IP, Click
Properties.
Select "Use the Following IP Address" and insert
192.168.1.1 in 1st Line
Subnet Mask set to 255.255.255.0
Click OK and the Save
TIP - Tick the box called "Show icon in notification area
when connected" which is at the bottom of this screen.

Do the same on the other machine.

Now that may by sufficient, but you also need to indicate
which FOLDERS you want to share between each machine.
(Right click a folder, Sharing and Security, and set the
share options you want). This will allow the OTHER
machine(s) to see this folder.

The last catch is the cable between the machines.

If you run a cable btween the 2 machines without a hub
then it has a "twist" in its cable - normally the cable
is RED or it has RED ENDS.

If you are connecting to a hub (switch) then you want a
standard cable which is normally BLUE with BLUE ENDS.

Last Catch

Having set everything up, turn it all off and start it up
again. This will then automatically have the machines
polling for a connection.

See how you go with all that

Best of Luck
