How can I set a time for my PC to power on and off?

I'd like to set a time for my PC to automatically power on and start up
Windows XP, then a time for shut down and power off. I've looked in the bios
for a setting but didn't find it. Also, will my XP user password need to be
disabled in order for XP to start up automatically. I'm trying to run a
timed software application without leaving my computer on 24/7.

Your computer will not start up by itself.
Someone must manually press the power
button to start the computer.

You cannot schedule your machine to automaticaly start. You can schedule a
shutdown or a reboot.

Using Task Scheduler to schedule the computer to shut down and restart at a
specific time

Why don't you buy a cheap plug in timer and use that to turn your computer
on. Mine starts when I switch on the wall socket. However my monitor does
not

If your BIOS doesn't support powering up at a predefined time (and in my
experience many, many don't) then you might want to look for some "wake on
lan" or "magic packet" tools on Google--IF you have another machine on your
LAN that's already on when you want the other one to come up.

That, with a combination of any shutdown tool that others have already
mentioned, might get you there...
