How can I save the color settings on a pivot chart?

I created a pivot chart in excel, but when I change the color or pattern and
then change the criteria and change it back it looses the setting changes.
Is there a way to stop this from happening? I am using Excel 2003

Loss of formatting is a known problem with pivot charts. There's
information in the following MSKB article, suggests recording a macro as
you apply the formatting:
